I'm surprised he hated Mallrats, but maybe that's because his character was one of the baddies. It must be quite hard to be objective about films you've been in when you're good friends with the director / writer. Perhaps he felt it was okay to say because Kevin has dissed the film in the past (unjustly, but anyway).
Of course, I could go way out into left field and say that maybe Ben just didn't like the film, and he'll give his opinion straight, regardless of who his friends are. Rather refreshing, really.
