Well.
This might be long, so here is the easy way ahead of time. Ignore the rest of the post.
1. Scour used book stores.
2. Amazon
3. E-Bay
4. Steal from library.
..I have a head start on most..I started reading the books EARLY..my brain is too addled to give a year, but I was in early High School.
Now, I have literally gone through these books, abused them..by reading them AGAIN AND AGAIN.
As such, when they started to filter out of print, I was aware of it..even BEFORE "Clerks" blossomed into Mallrats, and then fades into the NOW..my fave director(Okay, second fave...Woody has you..sorry,Kev..) is doing "Fletch", my fave series of books, and films..with Jason Lee, a "Fave" of mine since Mallrats.
Where does this post go?
Trying to help someone.
As I said, I go through A LOT of Fletch books. Hopefully, someone will decide to skip "Fletch Won" and start with "Fletch" and go chronilogically.
They read easy...one sittings, some....and yeah, you can see where the dialogue influenced certain artists.
Anyhoo....Recently, I did my "Fletch Count"...and man, the paperbacks were in SORRY shape.
I had a few hardbacks that I..well, forgot to return to the library...
(Seriously..I just kept reading them, until they gave up...)
The rest were trashed.
I remember reading on this board how hard they were to find.
Here's my deal.
I was living in Las Vegas, and found EVERY LAST ONE of the Fletch books by scouring used book stores.
I also hitched some hardbacks from the libray before I left...but I paid for them. I said they were damaged, and paid in full.
I realize I am STILL an azzhole for doing this, payment or not.
In California, I decided that I needed more back-ups, and AGAIN, scoured from San Diego to Riverside..found all but Fletch's Moxie..which I still have two copies of.
I also have ordered 3 hardbacks off of Amazon ..the book thing...and 2 from E-Bay.
I have also spotted them at the local library, and looked at them ..uhm..I need a clever analogy...anyway, they are plentiful..for NOW.
My one hope is that they release more of the hardcover 3 packs...or, dare I wish it..a nice trade paperback, or hardcover, boxed set.
I'd shell out the dough.
Sorry for the boring post..that is why I just posted my methods at the top..realized it was getting long...
But, just wanted everyone out there to know, you CAN have Fletch..and at some of these used book store prices..be on the safe side and spend the extra jing and get multiple copies of the books.
If the film does well, you never know which one Kevin will pick next.
Peace.
