Greetings all,
I just recently read Kevin's description of his adventures with the Catholic protest of his movie Dogma. I have to say that I am utterly astounded at Kevin's temperance and his understanding of their views. The fact that Kevin, even after the protestors "hate-talk" towards himself and his parents, felt no spite towards them, really shows his good nature and open-mindedness.
Up until recently, I was extremely anti-religion in my views. I labeled anyone who was religious or faithful as an idiot or simpleton. But for the last few months I have been becoming much more open-minded about religion in general, even embracing certain aspects of Christianity. I am now proud to say, if someone were to ask my religious affiliation, that I am Eastern-Orthodox. True, the factioning of religions, as said in Dogma, is contradictory to their beliefs. Despite all of this, the main problem that church-goers encounter as their own inability to follow and embrace the very beliefs upon which they base their whole lives. Of course this is a general and opinionated statement. As Kevin stated in his writing, Christ taught us tolerance, yet tolerance seems to be an alien concept to these people. Despite all of this, I do not believe it would hurt anyone to learn more about religion, thus understanding it more, and maybe becoming more tolerant. The same goes for those protestors who didn't even see the movie. True, if they were to actually watch the movie, it is very doubtful that their opinions would have changed, in fact, watching it would have probably cemented their opposing views, but at least they would have understood better what the hell they were so bent on protesting. Perhaps, the motive behind those protestors, film-makers like Kevin Smith, and people like me who post their interpretations and opinions on the furm that is the internet, is to learn from each other and better understand what makes people tick, and life itself.
Thanks for reading.....
