The name "HAL" comes from the Arthur C. Clark book, just like the other character names that Clarke created, not "IBM" as you probably think. Sure, if you look at the letter following ever letter in "HAL" you get "IBM", but that doesn't mean it's intentional. It's a lot like the Pink Floyd "Dark Side Of The Moon" thing with the Wizard of Oz. Just because there are coincidences doesn't mean that it was intentional.
