I also have some tips.
1. Get to the pay-off and get out of there. Complex plots are the death of the short film.
2. Learn to light properly. My first short was very poorly lit and this ruined the whole thing.
3. Think about editing before you start filming.
4. Don't attempt anything too big. Guns, drugs and murder in general are tricky to pull off, especially in 10 minutes, without looking cliched.
5. Make your characters swear lots. And include at least one reference to The Graduate or the Hitchcock film of your choice.
6. Tell your actors if they're crap. I get so caught up on trying to be nice that I forget this. Line read if you want, Kevin does it. :)
7. Respect your crew. They'll probably hate you after 3 or 4 hours.

That'll do,
Rich

: Kevin,
: I will soon be an art student at A.I.P., and for a scholarship, I have to make a ten min. short film. Now since I'm very new at making movies I was wondering if you had any pointer's, anything that would be great, It's like I really want to get started on this and I have a story but I don't know if it's good for a short film and if i can get my point across in only 10 min. So please give me something here.
: Thanks man,
: Chris Sloma
: P.S.
: Sorry but i'm poor and I really can't send ya smokes cause I don't know where you live but thanks for the help.
