I (usually) don't take it out on the actor. It's all about the screenwriter and director. Given the proper in both of these is critical. Going back to Uma... Pulp Fiction. Given good direction and a good script, she was really bitchen. Now, don't go see it if you haven't, you can never get those two hours back, but if you've seen Batman & Robin you will see she BLEW!!! I've rarely seen such bad acting (except in any Melanie Griffith movies). But I couldn't blame Uma. She's given good performances before... so I placed the blame solely where it belongs... Joel Motherfuckin' Schumacher.
So, to the meat of my theory, you really just need a good director and screenwriter to get the most out of your actors. We know Kevin does both very well. We know the script will be funny and I know Kevin has the ability to say, "No, Mr. Biggs. Not 'Hey. Wherethefuck is my weed?' but HEY! Where the FUCK is my weed?!?!?!' Got it?"
Anyhow, I totally agree with you that most american teen dramas blow. I just don't go see them. (I'll see "She's all That" while I'm burning in hell) But I don't think Kevin's going to make that movie. I'm going to do what the critics will do. Condemn it after I've seen it.
