Allegedly, and I've heard and read Kevin talking about this, the guy in the plain is a tribute. I think Kevin implied [I actually asked him this at a Q&A], based on conversations with Crowe, that the character is a tribute.
But, if nothing else, Cameron Crowe is a Kevin Smith fan.
