Speaking as someone who has flown into New York from England a few times, a couple of things. Firstly, you're unlikely to be jetlagged. The flight isn't too bad (seven hours or so), and you're bound to be jumping up and down with excitement when you arrive if it's your first trip. I certainly was.
Also, how much lugagge are you bringing with you? One decent sized suitcase and hand luggage isn't going to kill you.
Assuming you're coming into JFK, the cab into Manhattan will cost you thirty bucks flat rate (plus tip, and don't be stingy). You can direct it anywhere you want on the Island - be it Grand Central Station or wherever. You'll be able to get to whichever station direct from the airport, and it won't be tricky or expensive.
By the way, some shyster tried to con me with his minicab the last time I flew in by pretending that all the Yellow Cabs were on strike. Go round the side of the terminal and get an official yellow cab - you won't be ripped off that way, and there's usually a load of them (and someone there to help you as well).
It all sounds daunting, but it's really not. And all joking aside, you speak the same language, so you should be fine.
