: I once heard Kevin give a speech on the aforementioned Manga comic.
: He said that he sent one to JLA shortly after he saw it, and she was none
too pleased with it.
: Apparently, Japanese artists enjoy drawing graphic depictions of sexual
situations. At first glance, this would seem to have no impact on the
story whatsoever.
: At second glance...
: Remember when Banky has the flashback and Alyssa's sexual escapades are
described in great detail?
: Apparently, the description wasn't enough for the artists.
: Put 2 and 2 together and figure out what Joey was mad about.
The thing is, the artist did not only represent the Banky/Alyssa flashbacks
in detail, but also the infamous "finger cuffs" episode with Cohey and Rick
Derris. Now *that* might look a little out of place. But let it be known
that it was not pornographic in any way. This was no U-Jin or Wolf Ogami
stuff... The whole of the book is drawn in shojo-manga style, that is,
girls-comics in Japan. Very delicate, big starry-eyes... That's the most
interesting thing, to see how the same story can bring different artistic
interpretations.

: Personally, I'd be more flattered by their representation of Americans
than I'd be pissed about 2 or 3 frames, but that's just me.
I feel the same. I had this idea that in Japan, only a few american movie
buffs would see and enjoy Kevin's flicks because it does not really
correspond to japanese comedy standards (re: Frederik Schodt's "Manga!
Manga!" in which he explains that the japanese audience finds U.S. comics
too wordy). I was really pleased to see that the movie had enough success
for a novel/manga to be based on it. Gives us hope for international
culture-sharing and stuff... Now I'd be even happier if there was a bit
less people who dislike japanese comics because characters have big eyes in
it or other meaningless details.
Love to all of you folks,
