Kevin,

I dunno... with Kelly and Gyrich dead in the movie's universe, you'd need a new catalyst. And the main thing that makes DoFP work in the first place is Kitty, a character the movie barely even blinked at.

I hate to be terribly predictable, but I'd opt for a Sentinels/Dark Phoenix storyline... if not for X-Men II/III, then perhaps III/IV. Sort of a Wrath of Khan/Search for Spock kinda thing. Jean crashes the shuttle into the bay, summer 2003, and then cooks the asparagus people, summer 2004. I'd personally love to see the Jason Wyngarde aspect of it unfold on film. (And I'm suddenly having Dazzler/Last Days of Disco flashbacks.)

A nice, action-heavy alternative would be a Muir Island/Proteus story, but it'd need a major re-working of the ending, which was pretty weak. Although if they hire the spiritual cousin of Joel Schumacher, I'm sure we'll get Arcade instead. [grin]
