Has he just drifted out of contact? Kevin said on the 'Rats commentary on dvd that Ed was pissed at WORKING(not pissed at BEING IN) on Mallrats (He was an electrician or something). Since then did Ed get pissed and tell Kev' to go fuck himself(a big mistake, seeing the popularity of Amy) or has he just gone off?
