I have to say, I haven't even seen the "CHASING AMY" DVD yet- yup, us folk here at View Askew apparently aren't worthy of getting copies of our own films from Buena Vista- so i haven't had a chance to look at the framing. I DO know that David Klien DID supervise the new 16:9 transfer a few months ago- I remember Kevin telling me about this when he was in LA doing post production on the CLERKS animated series. So, if the DVD is framed wrong, it would squarely be David's fault. I have no idea why this happened. Perhaps he just forgot how the film is supposed to be framed? After all, it has been a few years since he shot it, and a few years since the 4:3 1.85:1 hard-matted transfer that he supervised for the Criterion LD.

: Vince, Dave, anyone: why is the Amy DVD framed wrong? I thought Criterion was all about the quality: I thought Dave approved this...

He not only approved it, he supervised it- he's the guy with the answer to this question.

: Hell, it makes the comments about Framing in the train scene by Vince on the commentary look kinda dumb. I'm personally offended.

Heh heh, so am I, since we recorded that commentary while watching the old 4:3 1.85:1 hard-matted Criterion transfer and they just matched it to the new one. Makes me look like a fool, but remember- I was commenting on the original Criterion laserdisc transfer back in October 1997, not the new 16:9 transfer which I haven't seen.

: Okay, maybe not, but come on guys: I thought this disc was supposed to be RIGHT??

The one thing about View Askew is that Kevin trusts the people he works with, like DP Dave, to do their jobs correctly. If the disc is messed up it's a damn shame. Kevin talked to Dave who told him they were doing a new 16:9 transfer, and Kevin trusted him to do good by it. I will investigate further myself, and do an A/B comparison between the DVD (did I mention that I have to buy it even though I'm on the commentary?) and the LD (which was distributed by Criterion, so we actually got copies of that one) myself and see what's up.
