Chasing Amy Question

I just got the DVD of Chasing Amy and in the shot where Joey is talking on the phone to Ben at the train station she is wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs Jersey. In the commentary Kevin says that they had a hard time to get Joey to wear the Jersey but didn't explain why. Does any one know why she didn't want to wear the Jersey?
