Dear Kevin,

I was wondering why you chose to have the descendant of Jesus working in an abortion clinic in your movie. Most of the other liberties you took with Catholicism I could handle (i.e. Alanis Morrisette as God, the homocidal angels, siblings of Christ, etc.) but the abortion issue really threw me. By working in an abortion clinic, she asserts that there is nothing wrong with abortion. How do you feel about abortion and the Catholic Church? Do you feel the Church is too strict, that it should "change with the times?" Do you feel that it is "no big deal," and wish everyone would stop whining about it? Or do you feel, as the Church teaches, that abortion is the taking of a human life?

The Catholic Church's position on the issue is the strongest among all Christian denominations. If a member of the Catholic Church so much as assists a woman get an abortion, then that person is excommunicated. Ordinarily, that excommunication could only be absolved by a bishop, but because of the prevalence of abortion in our society, most diocesan priests may absolve someone who has been excommunicated for that reason.

I am sorry if I am asking you a question that you have been asked before. I tried to hunt through the archives for an answer, but I was unable to access them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email.

Pax Christi,

Joe

PS Because the subject of this message is so controversial, you may want to avoid a heated abortion debate on the boards. If so, feel free to email me privately.
