Like it or not, it's really easy to market.

- irregular visual style, stands out against other sitcoms
- nostalgia for dominant american cultural force (the tailend of the baby boom)
- unresolved romantic angle between leads
- endless... ad nauseum... soundtrack possibilities

Stick it between the X-Files and the Simpsons... and it sells itself.

So... much like Millionaire and Line, with their low-budgets and marketable stars... it didn't make much sense with Neil's friend's arguement.

As for Friends, maybe soulless and heartless aren't right.

Mindless condescending unoriginal pandering lookist racist unconscionable irresponsible vacant bullshit might be more apt for Friends.
