I don't think that it was really playing cancer itself for laughs so much as the whole support group mentality. And there was the whole 'testicular cancer as metaphor for emasculation' aspect, of course, but I don't believe the film wanted us to laugh at the disease itself. But the man-breasts...that was funny.
