Hello.
I love Mallrats, it's my personal favorite of the Smith films.
I agree that perhaps a direct sequel wouldn't be the best way to go about it. I like the films with refernces and some same characters.
Characters I would take from Mallrats:
Brodie
Gwen
Jay
Silent Bob
Trisha Jones
My favorites are Brodie (of course) and Gwen. I wish Gwen had been in it more. And, it is my largest hope that if Mallrats 2 is made, Joey is at least considered. I know, "personal politics", but...I think she's proven herself to be a fine actress. She held her own quite nicely in 'Rats and 'Amy, and well...she's part of the View Askew history and that can't be erased. Oh, and if they bring back T.S., Brandi or Renee, I beg them to recast. I can't stand Claire's fake American accent, Jeremy's never-ending Al Gore impersonation (uh, wood anyone?) or, well, Brenda.
My favorite sceens in Mallrats are the long takes. Like when Brodie and T.S. first make it to the mall (the Affleck scene, shock and damage, etc.) and at the end when Renee and Brodie reunite (may only be on the lazer disk? Renee standing to the right of the frame, seen just enough...Brodie on stage looking down on her...). Not that I think the whole film should be long takes (look at the piece of shit Hitchcock made outta "Rope"). Just...I don't know...when it's not all quick cuts it lets the actors to act more (Lee and Affleck proved this brillantly in 'Amy. Especially the Meow Mix scene), it allows the film to have a more natural feel (as opposed to fully controling the eye or the view), and slows down the pace and lets it develop with more of a real time feel).
The mall seems constricting (this from the girl who wrote an entire play set in one subway car)...I don't know. Some people think that Dante should leave the quick Stop (I disagree to a certan extent), then so should Brodie outgrow the mall. Because he's on TV, can he even go back to the mall? Does he now not have plenty of cash and thus the need for the refill cup is gone? If he has a chick, what does he have to complain about? Hmmm.
There could be problems with Trisha too...what would she being doing hanging out at a mall...unless she has to do a sequel to her book or something.
I just like Gwen. I say either have Joey or leave her out...but I really do think it's a great character that I wish I knew more about (sorta like Kimmy).
PS> Why disolve View Askew? I don't think Smith needs to cut all ties with his own company to go in another direction cinematically. And if it does go the way of the wind, what will happen to Lynch, Johnson, Vincent (VA2?) and Malcolm? Oh well, I guess it was fun while it lasted. I fell privleged just to have had the chance to see the films.
PPS> How funny would it be if just once Lee was allowed to say "Bull shot". That was the funniest thing about the ABC version.
My thoughts for this morn, I may ammend them later or outright contradict myself, but whathaveyou...I need coffee and a get out of class free card. :)
Love, as per usual;
