I find this all facinating. I'd always been under the admittedly ignorant impression that widescreen WAS always the better selection, and therefore rent / purchase widescreen copies (I'm poor and don't have a DVD player yet!) Is there any way for one to know if a poor transfer been done? I so prefer widescreen (I can't imagine watching "Manhattan" without it) that I would always go this route. I suppose I should just bite the bullet and get a DVD player.

: The "assholes" were the ones who initiated the name-calling. These are folks who probably don't have clue one about aspect ratios and how often so-called "widescreen" transfers are in fact themselves fucked up, but feel some internal need to get up on a high-horse and ridicule anybody who says they don't like letterbox. To those folks I say, I guess Stanley Kubrick is an idiot too, and also Bill Friedkin (THE EXORCIST, THE FRENCH CONNECTION), James Cameron (who has said he prefers the full-frame versions of his movies for home viewing), etc. My point was, none of those folks are experts when it comes to this stuff, they just KNOW that letterbox must ALWAYS be better, and that liking letterbox makes them better people than anybody who doesn't like it. That attitude just stinks IMHO.
