Kevin:
I just got home from watching Dogma, and I just wanted to say I really liked it. As a Catholic, it made me think about a couple things, but I'm not offended, and I will still be going to church tomorrow.
I could still see how some could still interpret it as an attack on foundations of Catholic dogma: the movie states that Mary had sex after having Jesus, which is plausible, but not something Catholic "Marians" want to hear. Also, I think some Catholics might not like Carlin's portrayal of the cardinal, but there have been a lot WORSE portrayals of clergy in film. OtherwiseI saw none of the stuff about the Mass, or Jesus, that the "hate letters" were referring to.
I thought Dogma sort of reminded me a bit of two books I have read, involving angels, devils and the like that you might find interesting(NOT THAT I'M ACCUSING YOU OF PLAGIARISM, MIND YOU!)The first was "Humans" by Donald Westlake, in which a ragtag band of humans is sent by an angel (of death?) to cause the end of the world. In that book, the demon tries to STOP the Apocalypse. The other book is "Only Begotten Daughter" by James Morrow, in which a Jewish Jersey girl from Atlantic City is the daughter of God, there is a lot of discussion of Catholic, Jewish and other theology, and New Jersey is turned into a sovereign country populated by people awaiting the end the world (Like THAT would ever happen...)

Finally the questions:
How much research did you do into the theology involved? Though I had a Catholic school education, your movie was the first I had heard ever of "plenary indulgence." I personally question the whole "Church's law is Heaven's law" bit around which the movie revolves. For example, does that mean that those killed during the Spanish Inquisition are burning? The many scientists the Church excommunicated/condemned because of their theories are not in heaven because of some ignorant 17th Century clergy?

An early draft of the script you posted on the website had God (Alanis) uttering a single line to Bethany. Was that just not part of the final script, or was that edited out?

Oh, and would have been THAT obvious if one of the Stygian Triplets was wearing a New Jersey Devils jersey??? OK, maybe it would.

I've rambled on long enough. Once, again, excellent job with this movie.
