Nah, I think they were both forgiven and went to heaven with Alanis. The looks that God and Bartleby exchanged before his head blew were those of compassion and forgiveness. Also, I think Bartleby whispers a faint "thank you" before he dies.

I think he's only a "watcher" to the people he watches. He had no reason to know anything about Bethany.
