Okay, just got home from the 7:05 Dogma showing at Menlo Park mall.
The theatre was only half full but I noticed a lot of older, (35-45) people. That was good to see.
Now, my review.
Okay, first, the players.
Carlin: What can I say. Carlin is, and always will be pure genius. No less then brilliant.
Linda F,(not even attempting the spelling): I love this lady. Sexy and smart, however I just could not accept her in this movie. In the bedroom scene where she is just meeting Azreal (sp) and she is standing and screaming, "Who the fuck are you?", she seemed to be struggling to get that stuff out. She is fine and all but I don't know, she just didn't sit well. That's not to say she wasn't brilliant, but in my OPINION I would have enjoyed somebody else.
Chris Rock: Again, usually great but I don't know, he just seemed to be struggling. (And please, no more naked Chris Rock. That was damn gross!)
Salma Hayak : Holy fuck that girl is hot!!!! But where was her accent? I think I noticed in the credits she was the only one with a dialect coach. Was that to help lose the accent?
Ben Affleck: I have always like this guy but god damned, I have more respect then ever. He was brilliant, and in my OPINION was the best part of the entire movie. He was just so on. I think he is like the next Pacino or Deniro, the kind of guy who brings perfection to whatever he touches.
Matt Damon: I have never liked Damon and even Dogma can't change that, though I must say, an interest was sparked. Maybe I will go back and check out Good Will Hunting again. I liked that movie, just not him.
Kevin Smith: The second best part of the movie. Those eyes that say more than any words could ever. Funny as shit. How does the man perform like that and direct?
Jay: My guess is he was totally sober the whole time, but I might be wrong. Jay had grown so much as a performer. I agree with Kevin's comment. He was in a movie wth real actors and performed marvelous.
It was nice seeing Brian O., Jeff A., and Dwight E., even if the roles were minimal.
Jason Lee: I don't know, though he played his part well I expected more from his character. I didn't see that Banky/Brodie - ness too him.
Alanis M: She's hot/she's not hot, she's hot/she's not hot, I don't know. She was damn cute in this movie.
Alan Rickmen(sp): I don't know. I couldn't stand him in the Dogma trailers or in the beginning of the movie but in the end scenes with him I enjoyed him. I am still mixed on him. Have to see it again.
Now, for the movie itself.
Overall I enjoyed it. I must see it again however to just watch it. I concentrated alot on trying to grasp the whole Theology of it. Next time I see it I can jsut watch it as a movie with an understanding of the background techicalities. The movie moved along at a nice pace and mixed drama and comedy well. Mallrats is still my favorite as far as repeat viewing goes. But all in all I think Dogma was worth the wait. It will do well, if not in the theatres then definately on DVD and Video. I know I am buying the DVD.
Now some questions.
If God was a woman and everyone knew it, (Bartleby, Loki, Rufus, etc) then why did they keep refering to her as him? Or was that just to back up the theory of the fact that it was hard to accept God as a woman?
Also, and this I would like an explanation for... If Bartleby and Loki know everything about everybody, (like the people in the airport, on the bus, and in the Boardroom Meeting) then why didn't they know that Jay and Silent Bob were the prophets and Linda the chosen one? They should have known that easily. That bothers me. Only Kevin can answer that one for me.
Now, was there any Julie Dwyer refferances? I caught so many little things, Like the Derris sticker on the ticket window, and Jason Lee's, "Step aside Red" line in the bar lifted from mallrats, but I didn't catch any Dwyer referances. Did I miss it? I figured since she was dead and this movie was about Heaven and Hell there would be some mention.
Anyway, over all this movie was great. Out of 5 stars, I rate it 4 and 3 quarter stars. I don't see anything harmful that would piss off so many people warranting hate letters. I know they wrote them without seeing it. It's a shame because now that it is out, instead of actually judging it after seeing it, they will continue to boycott without even seeing it.
And now Jay and Silent Bob will return in....HAHA, See the DAMN FLICK and you will Find out!
A very delighted Hare. Well worth the $8.50 I spent.
