Near the Alan Rickman walk-on-water scene, I felt this strange sensation. Strange because I was in a comedy--a Kevin Smith movie no less---and I was on the verge of tears. I'm not sure when it happened specifically, just that during it I thought this is becoming an extraordinary movie about faith and love. Did anyone else feel this way at all--I mean, this is the guy who did Clerks and Mallrats--should I be crying in one of his movies? Sure, maybe Braveheart or something....but Dogma? I would like to know if anyone else had this experience...perhaps Smith could let us know if during his writing he felt these things also...I imagine so...but it would interesting to know if you have seen people moved in the same way.
Also....EW gave your movie a favorable rating---but they pissed me off because they questioned your style and said the movie was ugly? What the hell is that anyway--I clearly saw it was a Smith movie with its eccentric settings and scenarios...weird staging alright, but "ugly". So much for their devotion to independent films, eh? They suck...
Great film----very funny in many places, but the seriousness and passion really came through for me (I still can't believe it put me on the verge of tears) Is this too much ass kissing? Sorry, I was just very moved and wanted to say great job. I think the critics who pan this film as appealing to the LCD are either missing their frontal lobes or are in league with the Catholic League (and people here in Plano TX---who, despite having 6 theaters--two huge ones with 20 theaters apiece...didn't have room for Dogma....oh, but they did have room for Omega Code! That says a hell of a lot for the truth behind Dogma. The Omega Code?!)
On of the best films about faith AND love to come around in a long time--all neatly tucked away in a comedy. Thanks.
