: : 2. Too many inside jokes: from Grant Hicks, to Walt and Steve-Dave, to the "Step aside, Red", while I laughed, the casual viewer couldn't really get into the movie. In fact, I found myself and my friend to be the only ones laughing in many instances during the film.

: All the movies have had there share of inside jokes. In Chasing Amy, for example, references to Julie Dwyer, Rick Derris, "snootchie bootchies" which nobody would've understood who hadn't seen Mallrats, Jay's comments about not hanging out at the mall anymore, etc. But i saw chasing amy before seeing either clerks or mallrats, and there was still plenty for me to enjoy. It was funny even without all the inside stuff...those were just extras for the people who have seen all the movies.

Let me clarify my original post, I had no problem with the inside jokes themselves, but with the lack of other jokes. I enjoyed (and laughed my ass off at) any that I caught, but I thought the other View Askew films had more to offer to the normal filmgoer.
By the way, I also saw Chasing Amy first and I can't tell you how much more I enjoyed it after seeing Mallrats and Clerks, although I loved it the first time as well.
