All the movies have had there share of inside jokes. In Chasing Amy, for example, references to Julie Dwyer, Rick Derris, "snootchie bootchies" which nobody would've understood who hadn't seen Mallrats, Jay's comments about not hanging out at the mall anymore, etc. But i saw chasing amy before seeing either clerks or mallrats, and there was still plenty for me to enjoy. It was funny even without all the inside stuff...those were just extras for the people who have seen all the movies.
