A steady stream of 'hate mail' has been reaching our mailboxes since an unauthorized early draft of the 'Dogma' script was placed on the Web many months ago. This was followed by a booklet distributed by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights which urged people to write to then distributor Miramax/Disney with their complaints. As such, most of the letters are addressed to either Disney, Miramax, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, or Michael Eisner.

The following is a sample of the type of 'hate mail' that we've been getting:

Please note that all of these letters were sent months before the film was even announced for release. Most of the letter writers have not yet seen the actual film.

As a Catholic, I find it so very very sad and disheartening that your company would present a film such as "Dogma." From what I've read about it, the film sounds like an outrageous attack against what I hold to be sacred and holy.

I wonder why you both do this. I wonder how you can completely overlook the offensive language and script. I wonder how you can be so cold and callous, seemingly to care nothing except making some money and insulting several million Catholic believers.

It only serves to encourage the bad blood between the Jewish faith and my faith, which is Roman Catholic. It only fans the flames because people see this as a Jewish insult to our sacred faith.

I really don't know why you cannot hold back the distribution of this film. Somehow I hope, and I will pray, that you both will get over the 'artistic freedom of expression' excuse and face reality. This film directly insults me, my faith and my beliefs.

As I write this letter I am saddened. It's such a beautiful world we live in - full of hope and promise as well as pain and misery. If we all worked together to compromise - to tolerate each other instead of name calling and blasphemous statements about beliefs one holds dear, then this traditional mistrust of both faiths could really get better. But by doing what you are doing, I am afraid you are turning back the clock. You are reaffirming all the ugly beliefs and nasty innuendos people make about Jewish people. I'm sorry for you. I hope you wake up and stop what you are doing. Please answer this letter by explaining to me how you could possibly justify distributing this work of filth.

PS - You may wish to consider this: Mary, the Blessed Mother and her son Jesus Christ were both of the Jewish faith. Shame on you!!

There the KKK, there's you
There was Hitler, there's you
There are Satanic beliefs, there's you
There are un-American bigots, there's you
There are the un-Godly + damned, there's you
All that's vile comes from you. You teach hatred and prejudice. You insult Christians, especially Catholics. How Satanic!! Yet you demand respect + are quick to yell prejudice. How can you expect what you don't give?

You teach hatred, you insult others, yet, demand respect. Hitler didnt die, your still doing his hatreds and works.

Are you aware you're un-American? You demand your rights you demand + so on, but insult others + their beliefs. How low-down and hateful! May God judge your terrible acts. To get respect you must give it + you are cowards + highly prejudiced.
